There are two main determinants to assess the need for a sump pump. The first is local regulations as prescribed by the Building Code of the area you live in. Some municipalities require by law the installation of a sump pump so that the water does not go into their systems. A sump pump is also necessary in those houses where the weeping tile system is not fed into a gravity-based drainage. There the sump pump is needed to lift and discharge the accumulated water. As all sump pumps are electric, we recommend as well the installation of a battery backup for the sump. Many basement leaks occur during severe thunderstorms, times when there are also often power outages. A battery backup maintains the sump in operation at times when the power source fails.
